A design competition was held to revitalise this unusual urban space. The site has unique and strange qualities: it is dynamic yet diminutive, heroically scaled and brutally sited.

The colour green is at the heart of the project. Referencing the form and colour of surrounding Fig Street trees, the Light Forest concept breathes light and life into the under-croft. The design strategy builds on the proposed pathways, strengthening the neighbourhood’s pedestrian life. With the aid of artificial light, the underpass is transformed from a place of constant shadow to one of green, purple and blue illumination.

The Legs 11 is a steel frame sculpture 5m x 4,5m made of reflective montaged road signs. It was designed for Taylor Square, which at the time, was the number one national pedestrian death spot. The scale of the sculpture relates to both passing motorists and pedestrians.
At night its reflective cladding was lit up by the headlights of cars driving up Bourke Street. Acting as a sign or beacon it broadcast to the through traffic that this was “largely” a place for pedestrians. The passing flicker of car lights on and off the sign animates the sign and is reflective of the activity in the area.

The design concept for this house is based on site and functional requirements. The ground level is a robust concrete plinth extending within the length of the mandatory setbacks. It contains all the bedrooms and services. By contrast, the living areas sit at right angles over the plinth, within a lightweight steel and timber pavilion. The southerly prospect and the northerly aspect are maximised.

Materials have been selected to minimise maintenance over the longer terms, to ensure that the building ages well into it’s marine environment and thereby develops an authentic patina. Applied finishes are minimised.
