As Sydney’s population grows the need for quality public space becomes ever more important. The Cabramatta Common project transforms an existing carpark into a new public space with a civic status. Connected to the station by a newly aligned street, the project has as it’s focal point a new community centre, which terminates the long “stoa’ like colonnade that forms the southern end of the square. The existing market like feel of the retail shops, laneways and arcades are retained giving a great vitality to the edges of the space and permeability to the square as a whole. Opposite the community centre is a large clear space, behind which is an urban park, made up of a chequerboard grid of indigenous and exotic trees, providing much need shade and a scaled down intimacy to the space.
