Dramatically located, this project transforms an existing car-park into a contemplative pedestrian space that links the new park to the beach and the coastal cliff walk. Focusing on edges and views, the scale of Sam Fiszman Park belies the dramatic scale of the surrounds.

Level changes are met by a series of terraces, steps, seats and walls to afford passage down the site and create a range of interlocking spaces from which the panoramic views are enjoyed. Planted terraces link the place to the greater areas of lawn and native grasses adjacent.  An informal convex amphitheatre is formed. Concrete forms a neutral and robust foil to the existing sandstone.

At the top of the site, two room-like lookouts crown the rock floaters, one orientated towards the horizon, the other to the city’s coast. Lined with blue glazed bricks, they capture and condense the blue of the view, like little monuments to the view.

The entry is marked by a long walled element, containing the park’s name, in a honeycombed weathered relief. On the lee side is a long seat, which provides a pointer back to Bondi and the city. Together, the lookouts and seat are organised as a triptych of tighter spaces, providing shelter from the incessant winds and making a place here at the edge of the city.
