The ‘Slipstream’ neon art installation mirrors, reflects and amplifies the ebb and flow of the adjacent freeway and Melbourne’s Yarra River. The major audience of the wall is the traffic passing by on the Westgate Bridge Freeway, one of the busiest roads in Melbourne. Images of traffic patterns – car headlights, tail lights, flicking blinkers, bicycle lights – are the primary generator for the work. The secondary presence of the river, with water movements and reflections, suggests a myriad of rhythms and patterns for the neon artwork and its animation.

The strong horizontal composition echoes the river and freeway’s linear qualities. The use of one simple repetitive element, the neon light stick (formed into varying modules), creates a consistent unity, flow and direction.
