Douglass Place, a listed heritage item, is a sandstone embankment in the Spanish Quarter between Douglass Lane and Sussex Street that was largely inaccessible due to its steep fall and disrepair. The project formalises the place as a pedestrian threshold to Douglass Lane and the surrounding laneway system, enhancing the area’s connectivity. A fine steel structure has been inserted that includes a staircase and a series of lights. The stonework and drainage have been repaired. The steel stair cantilevers over the stonework, providing more ample passage and highlighting the difference between existing and new components. The red lights under the stair and the cantilevered lighting beams that frame the space illuminate the place theatrically. Together they augment the Quarter’s characteristic contrasts of light and shadow.
