The project brief was to remake the poorly maintained naval memorial and formalise the harbour side reserve into a park.  The memorial remembers the HMAS Tingira, which was a boys training ship, moored in Rose Bay from 1912. The team’s approach was to undertake a minimal series of interventions that would spatially integrate the memorial and the new park and improve their visual connection with Rose Bay and Sydney Harbour.

The poorly sited memorial and its associated planting and the small trees, scattered throughout the reserve, were removed to reveal and frame an existing view to the harbour between 2 existing Casaurina stands at the waters edge.  The footpath was widened to form a wedge shaped platform and public ceremonial space addressing the view.  A low wall was created to define the edges to the ceremonial space and the park, act as a pedestal for the memorial text and mediate the flat ceremonial space with the park’s gentle slope towards the water.
