“Flight Deck” Collaroy

This remarkable 1960s modernist apartment building designed by Architect Forsyth Evans sits boldly on the Collaroy Surf front. Evans was at his most productive in the late 50s, early 60s producing the remarkable Chilterns Flats at Rose Bay and Glenhurst Gardens Darling Pt.

Modelled on holiday like apartments the view, as for many modernist “object” buildings, largely influenced the plan. 3 apartments per floor, in a U shaped symmetrical plan, all face east with ocean views. Only one apartment includes a northerly aspect, all have excellent cross ventilation.

MWA’s scope includes a new sculptural entry canopy and a new balustrade. The 12 levels of wrap round balconies means that there is more than a kilometre of balustrades to replace. The sheer length of balustrade has meant that customised extrusions could be made for the posts and the new top rail.
