This project is about views and rooms. Views to Sydney Icons, views to iconic paintings and rooms from which these icons might be viewed.
A concept diagram was based on a collection of paintings by Dorothy Napangardi, which were on a black ground. As a foil for this masterwork, A rich, warmish “Dark Core” was inserted within the centre of the plan. Everything outside of the core is a pale high key finish. This organises and abstracts all the services including the kitchen, bar, guest bathroom and secondary bedrooms.
A direct lift entry called for a “foyer wall”, which introduces the “Core”, with a small homage to Utzon’s unbuilt SOH interiors.
Opening up to views of Circular Quay, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour, the apartment and its views are a reminder of place, with this same matched spirit brought inward connecting to context. – The Local Project
